CEO Institute of Imagination:
The Power of Creativity and Play
Martin Allen Morales is an award-winning CEO, social entrepreneur and international business leader with a career spanning the commercial, charitable and social impact
sectors. Across his career, one theme has remained constant: bringing people, ideas and organisations together to build a fairer, more sustainable and more inclusive world.
His international career began in music and technology, where he was part of the founding European team that launched Apple’s iTunes, working alongside Steve Jobs, before going on to lead Disney’s music business across 27 countries in
Europe. He later became a social entrepreneur, founding and scaling the Ceviche and Andina restaurant group, employing more than 200 people and building one of the UK’s most recognised Latin American food and cultural brands, with sustainability, ethical sourcing and community at its heart.
Martin is currently Chief Executive of the Institute of Imagination. The charity works with children, educators and communities to develop creativity, skills and agency through play, STEAM and emerging technology, while contributing to wider policy and systems change.
Born in Peru and arriving in Britain as a child refugee, Martin brings a deeply international perspective to his leadership and a strong understanding of migration, inequality and the relationship between opportunity, culture and economic empowerment.
Martin is currently a Non-Executive Director of Como No and recently served as an Expert Commissioner on England’s National Play Commission. He is also a best-selling author, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Founder of the OKAL
Forum for social impact leaders.
Ep 59. Martin Allen Morales, CEO Institute of Imagination:
The Power of Creativity and Play
Imagine if creativity and curiosity truly underpinned how children learn - what aspiration and innovation could be unleashed? How can we truly empower children to reimagine both their future and ours?
This is the primary focus of the Institute of Imagination.
In this episode, Martin Allen Morales, CEO of the Institute of Imagination, joins us for a conversation about the power of creativity, curiosity and play.
We explore the Institute’s programmes that centre play as a core methodology within their pedagogy; and how they stay true to representing children’s voices.
We talk about systems change and the need for disruption to build new models of aid and development.
We also talk about Martin’s extraordinary journey coming to the U.K. from Peru as a child, and how he used the mediums of music and food to foster human connection and a sense of belonging.
And how, 40 years on, anti-immigration sentiment still casts a shadow on British society… and what Andy Burnham’s new government needs to do to change it.
